Traveling with Fine Jewelry: DOs and DON'Ts

A simple guide to packing fine jewelry for your next vacation

written by a jewelry designer, not an influencer

Your travel destination, mode of transportation and risk tolerance are absolutely things to consider when packing fine jewelry, but I'm going to simplify things for you.

As an independent designer and metalsmith, here are my tried-and-true tips for traveling with fine jewelry.

DON'T

Don't overpack. You only need 2-3 extra options.
Contrary to girl math, more jewelry equals more problems. The jewelry I wear every single day stays on my body and joins me on vacation (special note: I usually leave my diamond engagement ring at home). The extra jewelry I pack complements what I wear daily. This way, I have the option to layer or swap without having to overthink it.

Examples of complements:

solid gold huggie hoops, wishbone stud and large hoop earringssolid gold layering necklaces

If you wear huggie hoops and studs daily, pack one pair of larger hoops. If you wear shorter necklaces (16-18 inches), pack one longer necklace (20-22 inches).

Don't put your fine jewelry in a checked bag while en route to your destination.
Never store your valuable jewelry inside luggage that will be handed off to a 3rd-party. There are only two places your fine jewelry belongs: 1) on your body, 2) inside your handbag/backpack...that's on your body.

DO

Do leave irreplaceable jewelry at home.
Your own risk tolerance comes into play here. I choose to leave my engagement ring at home because the potential heartbreak and stress of losing or breaking it is cause enough. The same goes for family heirlooms. The only exception to this rule is if I'm staying at a trusted friend's or family member's home.

Please don't purchase a fake engagement ring to wear on vacation. A simple diamond band or classic solid gold band is timeless and chic— trust me.

Do pack your jewelry in a dedicated case.
Because I only pack 2-3 extra pieces of jewelry, I opt out of having a fancy travel case. I intentionally use small, inconspicuous containers that can be easily hidden among my belongings. I like to use a pill organizer or a small bag with a zipper (separate jewelry in baggies as needed to prevent tangling).

Do lock up your jewelry.
If you're staying in a hotel, store your valuable jewelry in the room safe. If you're renting a private home, your best option is to put your fine jewelry in luggage that can lock.

That's it. Five simple tips I live by when traveling with fine jewelry. Keep stress to a minimum and enjoy your vacation!
